THUR JULY PŌ 16
Pōhutukawa is the mourning star when we remember loved ones that have passed since the last Matariki.
5.55pm Opening karakia and turning-on-the-lights countdown every night at the Matariki waharoa main entry.
Kahawai Illuminated Light Parade
The parade inspired by the kahawai, a fish treasured by local communities of Ngāti Paoa and Ngāti Whātua o Orakei. Like the schooling kahawai that move with purpose, the parade reflects the Matariki values of family, kotahitanga and manaakitanga. Bring your own lantern and join our nightly parade at 6pm from the Waharoa (gateway). Rangatahi from Ruapotaka Marae Kapa Haka will lead the parade to karakia and waiata at each of the Matariki stars in the light trail completing one full circle to end back at the Waharoa.
6pm – 9pm. The Matariki light trail turns Maybury Reserve into a magical landscape.
Enjoy light displays of Māori-inspired imagery set among thousands of fairy lights.
Wrap up warm and enjoy Māori New Year celebrations in Glen Innes.
